Vincentian Rehabilitation Services Adds Physiatrists

11/16/2009

Vincentian Rehabilitation Services has engaged the professional services of rehabilitation physiatrists to provide on site support and education on a weekly basis with patients and therapy staff at each of Vincentian Collaborative System’s (VCS) four nursing homes, serving more than 600 residents throughout Pittsburgh, as well as its outpatient rehabilitation center in the North Hills.

Physiatrist Dr. Mary Ann Miknevich with serve the North Hills facilities of Vincentian Home and the outpatient rehabilitation center on Babcock Boulevard. In the South Hills, Dr. Julia Wilcox will work with Marian Manor. Vincentian de Marillac in Stanton Heights and Vincentian Regency in Allison Park will be overseen by Dr. Ellen Mustovic. Miknevich, Mustovic and Wilcox also practice at Medical Rehabilitation Services, Inc.

"Not all nursing homes offer physiatrist guided therapy; the physiatrists' expertise adds a unique element to our already high quality inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation programs," says Kris Evans, Vice President and Administrator of Vincentian Rehab.

The guidance of a physician specializing in rehabilitation offers great benefit to both patients and staff.

Patients receive coordinated care as the physiatrist guides therapy treatments on an ongoing basis, and relates therapy to other types of treatments and medications the patient receives. Working in conjunction with each patient and their other physicians, therapy staff, and family members; the physiatrist can analyze, modify and give suggestions for treatment to ensure the fastest and most effective patient outcomes, returning the patient to his or her optimal level of functioning.

As a simple example, a patient may be taking medication that interferes with his alertness, or one that causes weakness. Either of these side effects may interfere with the patient’s ability to progress as effectively as possible with therapy. A physiatrist can look at all contributing factors and suggest modifications. Patients are able to be treated on a more individualized basis.

In addition to individual and group consultation, the physiatrists will provide in-service training to families and staff on a variety of topics that may require a specific skill set. The physiatrists may also help identify patients in VCS’s nursing homes who could benefit from therapy.

"There are indicators that a lay person may not be aware of," says Evans. "A trained eye may identify specific therapy needs that could improve a patient's life. The physiatrist can help coordinate that process for our patients."

Dr. Miknevich will assume the role of Medical Director for Vincentian Rehab. She will provide guidance and oversight in such areas as policies and procedures, strategic planning, and quality control initiatives.
